چکیده

Abstract In this study the impact of extreme cyclones on Arctic sea ice in summer is investigated. Examined particular are relative thermodynamic and dynamic contributions to volume budgets vicinity 2012 2016. Results from investigation illustrate loss cyclone trajectories during each year were associated with different dominant processes: (melting) Pacific sector 2012, both processes Comparison years further suggests that minimum extent influenced by not only strength cyclone, but also timing location edge. Located near edge early August over central later 2016, contributed comparable area (SIA) loss, yet enhanced Central a characterization impacts perspective processes, we present an index describing changes. This helps quantify improve our understanding initial state dynamical responses rapidly warming Arctic, implications for seasonal forecasting, marine navigation, coastal community infrastructure designation protected ecologically sensitive zones.

The impact of an intense summer cyclone on 2012 Arctic sea ice retreat

[1] This model study examines the impact of an intense early August cyclone on the 2012 record low Arctic sea ice extent. The cyclone passed when Arctic sea ice was thin and the simulated Arctic ice volume had already declined ~40% from the 2007–2011 mean. The thin sea ice pack and the presence of ocean heat in the near surface temperature maximum layer created conditions that made the ice part...

Cyclone-induced rapid creation of extreme Antarctic sea ice conditions

Two polar vessels, Akademik Shokalskiy and Xuelong, were trapped by thick sea ice in the Antarctic coastal region just to the west of 144°E and between 66.5°S and 67°S in late December 2013. This event demonstrated the rapid establishment of extreme Antarctic sea ice conditions on synoptic time scales. The event was associated with cyclones that developed at lower latitudes. Near the event site...

Future abrupt reductions in the summer Arctic sea ice

[1] We examine the trajectory of Arctic summer sea ice in seven projections from the Community Climate System Model and find that abrupt reductions are a common feature of these 21st century simulations. These events have decreasing September ice extent trends that are typically 4 times larger than comparable observed trends. One event exhibits a decrease from 6 million km to 2 million km in a ...

Arctic sea ice concentration observed with SMOS during summer

The launch of the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission, in 2009, marked the dawn of a new type of space-based microwave observations. Although the mission was originally conceived for hydrological and oceanographic studies [3,4], SMOS is also making inroads in the cryospheric sciences by measuring the thin ice thickness [5,6]. SMOS carries an L-band (1.4 GHz), passive interferometric...

Arctic cyclone water vapor isotopes support past sea ice retreat recorded in Greenland ice

Rapid Arctic warming is associated with important water cycle changes: sea ice loss, increasing atmospheric humidity, permafrost thaw, and water-induced ecosystem changes. Understanding these complex modern processes is critical to interpreting past hydrologic changes preserved in paleoclimate records and predicting future Arctic changes. Cyclones are a prevalent Arctic feature and water vapor ...
